"This is a human right's movement. It's for our world's most marginalized group of people. It is a movement on the march for people who have the fewest of rights. The group we fight for is children. Children everywhere."

-Reed Cowan
Founder, WESLEY SMILES COALITION

By some estimates today as many as a quarter million children in the United States are not attending school because of fear. Chances are, as you read this each of those children are experiencing anxiety and dread and panic associated with the victimization that happens as the result of being bullied in school. Emmy Winner, Author and activist Reed Cowan believes this is not only wrong, but shameful.

The victim of intense school bullying for much of his twelve years in public school, Reed Cowan now channels his efforts to revolutionize school atmospheres and cultures to eradicate what has long been viewed as a kids-will-be-kids rite of passage.

"We must no longer marinate in this lazy and hurtful mind set that somehow being bullied in school is the unavoidable circumstance of the young in school. Bullying in all its forms, is nothing more than emotional and physical abuse. It is criminal. It is cruel. Cruelty directed at any human being young or old is wrong. It always has been and it always will be."

For more than a decade Reed has spoken all over the country about the devastating effects of bullying on children. Reed tells his own story and re-tells the stories of thousands of young people who have entrusted their stories to Reed in hopes of change.

"One of our battle cries is this: Together, we will stop school bullying one story at a time. Every life has a story, every story has a lesson and every lesson has the power to change the world. We must rise up and speak the stories of our own school-yard victimization. And in the telling we must demand change."

Congruent with these efforts, Reed is part of the legislative process. Most recently Utah legislators unanimously passed legislation Reed authored addressing harassment, intimidation and bullying in Utah Schools. This effort has led to Reed writing THE POWER IN YOU. The song was recorded in Nashville by country sensation Collin Raye and is what Cowan calls: "A battle cry for under-celebrated children everywhere."
